UPS has purchased 130 hybrid electric delivery trucks this year (HEVs) to add to its current HEV fleet of 250.
- The 130 vehicles will be deployed in 2011 to join the 250 trucks already in operation in Atlanta (12), Dallas (13), Houston (37), and Phoenix (13), Chicago, IL- (20), Minneapolis (13), Louisville (20), Washington, DC (17), Austin (30), Long Island, (25), Philadelphia (50).
- The vehicles will be deployed in California, New York and New Jersey.
- The HEV fleet features a Freightliner Custom Chassis and a hybrid power system from Eaton Corporation. The external truck bodies are identical UPS's other signature brown trucks, although they feature additional labeling on the side identifying them as hybrid electrics.
HEV Fuel Economy
- UPS's automotive group estimates as much as a 35% savings in fuel economy.
- The 130 trucks being deployed are expected to save 66,085 gallons of fuel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 671 metric tons each year.
- The 250 HEV delivery trucks in operation currently are expected to reduce fuel consumption by roughly 127,088 gallons over the course of a year compared to a normal diesel truck. The hybrids should also reduce CO2 gas emissions by approximately 1,290 metric tonnes annually.
- Together, the 380 trucks are expected to save 193,173 gallons of fuel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,961 metric tons annually.
